I decided that God didn’t give me my hair for me to let someone else look after it!

Who are you?~ Sharon Stevens

Tell me about your child hood memories of your hair experience – you were either told that your hair was good or bad.

Washing hair was a painful experience and I’m sure mum took pleasure in hurting us.  She’d towel dry it and then try to comb it and if you moved she would ‘chop you in your head’ if we moved!

Did your mother have natural hair? Was this throughout your entire childhood or not.

Mum wore a wig except at home.

Can you remember how your mother described your hair? Or other female family members?

My hair was good my sister’s hair was bad and course like a corcous bag! (I don’t know what one is!)

How did others view your hair in the family,  My sister was jealous re my mother’s comments.

School – I don’t remember much except being asked if it could be touched.

Work – My hair has been different over the years but there’s been times when ‘others’ have asked if they could touch it

Have you always had natural hair ? for nearly 30 yrs

What stages of regime ( permed, relax, gericurl hot iron pressed)  different hair did you go through before being natural or have you been natural all your life?   Relaxed & gericurl

When you transitioned to natural hair where did you get the support, friends  family, internet colleagues?  Me – I  got fed up of having pay out large sums of money and spending a whole day at the hair dressers

Who has influenced you most in wearing your natural hair? Me – I decided that God didn’t give me my hair for me to let someone else look after it!

If you have children or young girl relatives, what have their hair experiences been at school ?

I have boys

How do you instill positivity in our girls particularly when they have a negative experience ?

I would tell them that they are valuable, precious and one a kind and that they should be confident and love themselves.

Describe your hair now in one word?

That’s hard ~  Crown

What do you love about your hair

It’s mine and I can do what I like with it. I love my hair; I have locs and wished I’d had them sooner.

Do you have any favorite styles?

Just as it is – actually I have a few! (See photos!) :-)

Do you have any favorite products?

I use avocado oil in my hair.  Wash it with baby shampoo and organic cider vinegar.  I use to use a black soap but I can’t get it anymore.

What positive message would you like to say to a young girl about their hair?

I have a granddaughter and another on the way and I hope that they grow up loving their hair, no matter what it looks like!

Love your hair, it’s part of you, your culture and don’t let anyone tell that your hair is not beautiful.  Have it how you like it, not what someone tells you how it should look.  Your hair is you.
