Tell me about your child hood memories of your hair experience
Running away from my Dad whenever he tried to comb my hair haha! Mum was a lot easier on the knots :)
Did your mother have natural hair? Was this throughout your entire childhood or not.
She enjoyed wearing braided styles most of the time and varying the ways in which she wore them.
Can you remember how your mother described your hair? Or other female family members?
THICK
How did others view your hair in the family: It depends on the style and the family member but overall it’s good
School: My friends have always been supportive of any style I try - particularly when I wear it our or in colourful braids. I have a great a great group of friends on that front
Work: Accepted in any style which is great. I was rocking silver braids when I got my most recent job.
Have you always had natural hair ? Almost always
What stages of regime ( permed, relax, gericurl hot iron pressed) different hair did you go through before being natural or have you been natural all your life?
I went through a phase of trying to flat iron my hair bone straight through high school! I thought it would make it more manageable but it became lifeless and damaged. I once straightened it and it stayed that for 6 weeks and I thought my curls could never come back - from then on I never straightened my hair again and focused on embracing it rather than erasing it.
When you transitioned to natural hair where did you get the support, friends family, internet colleagues?
No support was really needed - I drew most inspiration from natural hair vloggers and trailed and tested the rest.
Who has influenced you most in wearing your natural hair?
Family, artists and musicians like Lianne La Havas and Lauryn Hill.
If you have children or young girl relatives, what have their hair experiences been at school ?
Positive - especially when it comes to natural or protective styles.
As an designer I like to create greetings cards that show a variety of hair styles to promote positivity towards different hair types. How do you instill positivity in our girls particularly when they have a negative experience ?
